HIstory of GBLO

The Global Bhutanese Literary Organization (GBLO) was established in 2009 in the Bhutanese refugee camps of Nepal, born out of urgency and conviction. At that time, the Nepali language and literature faced the real danger of being forgotten. While many stakeholders and community leaders were preoccupied with the challenges of resettlement to third countries, a group of determined youths recognized the silent crisis: the loss of language, literature, and culture—the very identity for which the Bhutanese had endured exile.

The eviction of the Bhutanese, especially those from the southern belt who spoke Nepali, was rooted in their struggle to preserve their language and culture. They had agitated for the right to learn Nepali in schools and to practice their cultural traditions. Instead of granting these rights, the Bhutanese government chose to expel them. The irony is profound: once resettled in refugee camps and later given opportunities to move to third countries, many began to forget the very cause for which they were exiled. Survival and settlement took priority, while questions about the future of Nepali literature and language faded into the background. To confront this reality and to ensure that the Nepali language and literature would not be lost, a group of committed youths came together and founded GBLO.

Over the years, GBLO has grown into a vibrant, global movement with chapters in multiple countries. It has nurtured a new generation of writers, published numerous books, hosted literary workshops, and organized grand international festivals. Through initiatives like online magazines, a digital Nepali school, and libraries, GBLO has kept the flame of literature alive in diaspora communities. Rooted in the philosophy of Svikarokti, the belief in judicial, equitable, and ideal recognition of existence, GBLO continues to be a cultural lifeline, connecting people to their roots while inspiring global dialogue.

What we do?

Preserve and Promote Language & Culture

We safeguard the Nepali language and Bhutanese cultural heritage through festivals, cultural programs, and awareness campaigns. By protecting what our community once risked everything for, we ensure that future generations remain connected to their roots

Develop Writers and Literature

GBLO nurtures creativity by providing a platform for emerging writers and poets to grow. Through workshops, mentorship, publications, and competitions, we empower voices that might otherwise go unheard and strengthen the literary heritage of the Bhutanese diaspora.

Build Global Connections

With chapters in multiple countries, GBLO unites the Bhutanese diaspora around the world. We create spaces where literature becomes a bridge not only connecting communities across continents but also fostering intercultural understanding with the wider world.

Educate and Innovate

We run online Nepali schools, digital libraries, and online magazines that make literature and education accessible across borders. By embracing technology, we bring traditional values into modern spaces, ensuring that learning, reading, and writing thrive wherever our people live.

Organize International Festivals and Recognitions

Through grand international literary festivals and cultural gatherings, GBLO brings together authors, scholars, artists, and community leaders. These events celebrate literature, strengthen community pride, and highlight Bhutanese contributions to global culture. We also honor writers, artists, and social contributors through awards, felicitations, and recognitions, encouraging excellence and preserving the dignity of literary and cultural achievements.

Uphold Values of Svikarokti Philosophy

At the heart of GBLO lies the principle of Svikarokti—judicial, equitable, and ideal recognition of existence. We embed these values into our programs and leadership, ensuring fairness, inclusiveness, and harmony guide everything we do. This philosophy shapes our mission to not only preserve literature but also to inspire peace, empathy, and resilience across communities.
